The 100-Photo Cap Is Not a Target

By Tyler Landon, Jet Media Productions·

Stellar MLS allows up to 100 photographs on a residential listing. That number is a ceiling imposed by the system, not a recommendation about how many a house needs, and treating it as a target is one of the quieter ways a good listing gets weaker.

An earlier post worked out [how many photos an Orlando listing actually needs](/blog/how-many-photos-mls-listing-needs). This is the opposite failure: the set that arrives with 85 frames because the cap said it could.

What Does a Padded Photo Set Look Like?

Three angles of the same guest bedroom. The hallway. The hallway from the other end. Four bathroom vanities. The inside of the laundry cupboard. The garage from two corners.

No single frame there is wrong. Each is defensible on its own. The problem is what they do collectively to the frames that matter.

SetFramesWhat a buyer sees in the first screen
Edited32Exterior, living, kitchen, primary, pool, aerial, floor plan
Padded85The same seven, interleaved with 50 near duplicates

A listing photo set is not an archive. It is a sequence a stranger scrolls in under a minute, and every frame in it spends some of that minute.

Does Photo Count Affect How a Listing Performs?

More photos help up to a point, and stop helping well before 100.

The evidence for higher counts is real. A listing with thorough coverage gets more engagement than one with eight frames, which is why the cap exists at all and why a thin set remains the more common mistake. But the benefit comes from coverage, not volume. Once every room, the exterior, the lot, and the layout are represented, further frames add repetition rather than information.

In a market taking 64 days from list to contract, buyers are not studying listings. They are triaging them. The August ORRA figures put inventory at 12,144 with closed sales down 8.9%, which means a buyer has more listings to get through and less reason to linger on any one. A grid that reads as long and repetitive is a grid that gets scrolled.

Which Rooms Actually Earn a Second Angle?

A small number, for specific reasons.

RoomSecond angle justified?Why
Living or great roomYesLarge spaces do not fit one frame, and the relationship to the kitchen matters
KitchenYesOne for the room, one for the island or range wall
Primary bedroomYesRoom plus the ensuite or the view
Primary bathroomYesVanity and shower or tub are often separate
Secondary bedroomsNoOne clean frame each
Secondary bathroomsNoOne frame, and fewer if there are four of them
Hallways, closets, laundryNoThey answer a question the floor plan answers better
GarageOneSize and condition, nothing else

The pattern: a second frame earns its place when it carries information the first one cannot. Not because the room exists.

What Should Replace the Padding?

The three things a long grid is usually being used to substitute for.

  • A floor plan. Every hallway and closet frame is a clumsy attempt to explain layout. A floor plan explains it properly, and on Stellar it sits in [its own slot outside the 100 photo cap](/blog/floor-plan-free-mls-slot), so it costs nothing in frames.
  • An aerial. Lot size, what backs the property, and position within the community are three questions no interior frame answers. That is [what falls off a listing without a drone](/blog/what-falls-off-a-listing-without-drone).
  • A twilight exterior. One frame that makes the listing look unlike the twelve above it in the results.

Swap 40 near duplicates for a floor plan, an aerial, and a twilight, and the set is shorter, more informative, and visibly better than the competition.

How Many Frames Should an Orlando Listing Carry?

For most homes in this market, between 25 and 45.

A three bedroom home on a standard lot is well covered by about 30. A large home with a pool, a guest suite, and acreage might justify 50. The number that should worry a seller is not a set that came back at 28. It is a set that came back at 92.

Jet Media Productions delivers an edited set rather than every frame captured, from $219, with drone aerials and a twilight exterior included. The frames that do not make the set are the ones that were going to cost the listing attention.

Photo limits described here are Stellar MLS policy as of 2026, summarised as general information. Confirm current limits with your broker or with Stellar directly.
